Food Scientist

The opportunity

We are looking for an experienced food scientist to join our Product Innovation team at KitchenTown! This group works directly with the most promising food startups, entrepreneurs, scientists, and legacy companies to develop new food and beverage products. The most innovative food startups in the world—from alternative proteins to automated restaurants to functional products—come to KitchenTown to launch their companies. Your job is to create new products in collaboration with those brands. KitchenTown is an energetic food hub teeming with entrepreneurs defining the future of food. You want to make foods that are joyful to eat, nourish the body and mind, or regenerate the assets on which they depend. 

Candidates love variety, are creative, and are able to demonstrate strong technical knowledge while working in a fast paced environment. This person should have a passion for food innovation, a desire to improve the food system, and enjoy working as part of a small, nimble team in a lab setting. The Product Innovation team works in constant collaboration to pursue end-to-end innovation for multiple clients.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Conduct sensory, ingredient, and process assessments for new clients 
  • Enhance texture, functionality and appearance of product formulations
  • Formulation of new products from benchtop to production scale for multiple product categories
  • New ingredient sourcing, evaluation, costing, qualification and specification
  • Sensory testing: create, design and conduct testing
  • Ability to scale up recipes and attend plant trials at co-packers as needed
  • Conduct shelf life assessments and tests 
  • Plan and execute day to day project and lab activities
  • Manage time and priorities across multiple projects in collaboration with the team
  • Communicate effectively with clients and team members

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in food development
  • BS or MS in food science
  • Self-starter, enjoys working in a fast-paced innovation-centric environment
  • Passion for creating new and exciting products
  • Ability to be flexible with changing priorities and timelines
  • Creative problem solver and team player
  • Experience with lab note-keeping
  • Ability to lift 30-40 lbs
  • Ability to work in-person at our Product Innovation Lab in San Mateo, CA.

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience in plant protein space
  • Experience in baked goods
  • Culinary experience
  • Proficiency in Genesis

Marketing Manager

The opportunity

We’re looking for a Marketing Manager to join our team (ASAP)! The Marketing Manager is a highly interactive, relationship-driven role that will manage communication and collaboration across KitchenTown’s customers and community, including entrepreneurs, industry partners, and eaters.  

The Marketing Manager will own all engagement tools and tactics to maintain and grow our community. You’ll have your finger on the pulse of the food startup ecosystem and will also be responsible for supporting our corporate partnerships and product development programs. You will work across all departments with multiple stakeholders to facilitate communication, tell stories, and spearhead projects, and will report directly to the Director of Strategy.

The ideal candidate loves creating content and lots of it, is familiar with the ins and outs of food business, can anticipate needs and act accordingly, is an independent self-starter, and a proactive communicator. You are comfortable working with little guidance and are used to forging paths of your own based on shared team goals.    

Primary responsibilities:

  • Produce meaningful content that helps tell the story of KitchenTown to a primarily B2B audience
  • Write and design regular email newsletters and manage social media channels 
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop supporting marketing collateral relevant to each program (food development lab, production facility, accelerator program, an more)
  • Make both large and small updates to KitchenTown website to better tell the story of our food brands
  • Engage with startups in our community to source content, develop relationships, and provide support. This might include event planning, seeking new external partnerships, and other programming
  • Create and manage a monthly editorial calendar designed to bring food brands and industry partners back regularly
  • Proactive goal-setting: understand KitchenTown’s business needs at a high level and take initiative on new projects accordingly
  • Additional marketing and design support across departments as needed 

Experience:

  • 2-5 years marketing and design experience 
  • Previous work in the food or CPG industries 
  • Experience writing and producing content (newsletters, blog articles, social media posts, videos, etc.) 
  • Advanced computer skills (Google Suite, Adobe CC, Airtable, Zapier,  project management apps, etc.) 
  • Organizational wizard: ability to manage multiple projects at a time across different departments. You are detail-oriented
  • Proactive communicator: ability to seek out answers and facilitate communications between departments
  • Team player: you like taking initiative and working independently, but know that we are stronger together 

Compensation: This is a full-time, exempt role, on-site in San Mateo, CA with flexibility for some remote work. Salary commensurate with experience.
