Program Director - Future of Protein Consumer Insights

KitchenTown is looking for an experienced researcher, facilitator, and all-around food consumer insights pro to lead an exciting new initiative with one of our startup partners—a fast-growing and well-funded alternative protein company. This role is a unique opportunity to build an entirely new model of putting consumers at the center of the brand, informing new product development, and helping to grow a very promising new company. 

Launching in February, the Future of Protein Consumer Insights program will be a place where small groups of consumers are invited several times a week to share a meal, taste new products, and provide both quantitative and qualitative feedback. Once the company is out of stealth mode later in 2022, it will also include working with guest chefs and doing public engagement around the program and product.

Your role as the Program Director is to lead the design and execution of the consumer insights process, synthesize results and communicate those back to stakeholders across the company, and contribute to the company’s overall innovation strategy. 

Primary responsibilities: 

  • Work closely with company’s leadership to ensure program design is responsive to company goals
  • Lead the design and execution of the Program’s consumer insights process.
  • Facilitate consumer insights and sensory testing sessions (2-3 per week)
  • Analyze and synthesize all research findings into clear, concise, and actionable insights
  • Own the voice of the consumer, understanding their pain points and desires, and develop a clear perspective on the company’s target audience. 
  • Communicate key insights to various stakeholders (both internal teams at the company and external culinary or R&D partners) through presentations and workshops. 
  • Host investors and VIPs and present the goals and learnings of the program
  • Work with external consultants to design, screen, and recruit a dedicated consumer insights panel
  • Manage program’s budget
  • Manage the program’s Operations Events Manager to ensure smooth execution of daily program activities.  

Skills & Knowledge: 

  • Qualitative and quantitative consumer research
    • Experience in planning, scoping, conducting, analyzing, and communicating research
    • Experience and ease facilitating focus groups as well as design sprints/workshops
  • Strategic thought leadership
    • Creative storyteller who can bring this research to life and is comfortable speaking to diverse audiences
    • Strong understanding of overall food industry micro and macro trends, especially related to plant-based and alternative protein

Qualifications & Experience: 

  • 6-8 + years work experience in an intelligence and/or insights role, preferably within food and beverage industry
  • 3+ years management experience
  • Masters or equivalent preferred. 

Compensation & Eligibility: 

  • This is a full-time, 12-month contract with possibility to extend. 
  • Salary: $130k+, commensurate with experience.

Operations & Events Manager - Future of Protein Consumer Insights

KitchenTown is looking for an operations events manager with experience in food events planning to manage an exciting new initiative with one of our startup clients—a fast-growing alternative protein company. This role is a unique opportunity to help build an entirely new model of putting consumers at the center of a food brand, informing new product development, and helping to grow a very promising new company.

Your role as the Operations / Events Manager is to manage the day-to-day operations of the program and work with the Program Director and Culinary Director to create engaging consumer experiences. We will also host twice monthly investor events / tastings, which you will be in charge of managing.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Logistics: 
    • Order ingredients and supplies
    • Room setup
    • Coordinate custodial, shipping/receiving
    • Coordinate videography
    • Work closely with Culinary Director and Guest Chefs to ensure smooth execution of activities and events offering support as needed
  • Program & Project Management: 
    • Manage activities and events calendar
    • Coordinate with recruiters and process incentives to participants. 
    • Collect signed liability waivers
    • Work closely with Program Director to align on communication goals
    • Support Program Director with production of monthly presentation reports to client 
    • Hire temp staff as needed (prep cook, busser, dishwasher, server)
    • Coordinate with guest chefs
    • Project manage all events, develop and manage timelines

Production Floor Manager

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a manager with CPG food production experience to join our team at KitchenTown! The Production Floor Manager is a key role that interacts with many people on a daily basis to help manage our scale up food manufacturing facility. We’re looking for someone who is mechanically minded, experienced with food equipment, knowledgeable about QA and QC, Supply chain, Food Safety, Worker safety, Sanitization protocol, and Production shift patterns.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The Production Floor Manager works on the Operations Team and helps Warehouse and Maintenance personnel to ensure smooth operation of the facility on a daily basis.
  • Day-to-day management of shared commercial kitchen and warehouse, making sure workplace, food safety, and sanitation protocols are adhered to.
  • Work with Warehouse Manager and sanitation staff to operate a safe, clean food production facility.  
  • Oversee the successful production of food products, while ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Implement policies and procedures and recommend improvements in production methods, equipment, operating procedures and working conditions.
  • Handle all manner of problems and breakdowns typical for a food facility
  • Maintain production schedule and coordinate the use of multiple workstations and equipment 
  • Manage facility vendors such as pest control, chemicals, consumables, trash/compost/recycling collection.
  • Manage equipment maintenance and training programs. 
  • Commission new equipment and train staff on proper and safe use and cleaning procedures.
  • Ensure that production workers are observing GMP rules
  • Responsible for shift patterns and flow of ingredients into the facility.  
  • Remain compliant with safety and environment regulations. 
  • Responsible for insuring the company operating policies and procedures are being administered correctly throughout the facility
  • Oversee facility capex projects
  • Lead daily/weekly facility meetings
  • ·Conduct continuing analysis of production, recommending operational changes as required 
  • Ongoing FSMA and other regulatory compliance
  • Ensure that established standard operating procedures are being followed, and create and develop new protocols, systems and operations documents 
  • Think strategically about how to make continuous improvements on KitchenTown’s operational systems as our business evolves 
  • Job performance is measured by the CEO on how well the plant is performing its operations

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
    • Experienced with food production in a manufacturing environment, such as a co-packer, or CPG food company.
    • 5+ years of food manufacturing, kitchen operations, or related experience
    • 2+ years of people management experience
    • Knowledge and understanding of food safety & sanitation, production, equipment maintenance and warehousing
    • Ability to work with people from different backgrounds and experiences
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to be flexible and accommodating while upholding food safety standards and operating procedures 
    • Creative problem solver and team player 
    • Ability to stay cool under pressure
    • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and lift 25 lbs

    Food Scientist

    The opportunity

    We are looking for an experienced food scientist to join our Product Innovation team at KitchenTown! This group works directly with the most promising food startups, entrepreneurs, scientists, and legacy companies to develop new food and beverage products. The most innovative food startups in the world—from alternative proteins to automated restaurants to functional products—come to KitchenTown to launch their companies. Your job is to create new products in collaboration with those brands. KitchenTown is an energetic food hub teeming with entrepreneurs defining the future of food. You want to make foods that are joyful to eat, nourish the body and mind, or regenerate the assets on which they depend. 

    Candidates love variety, are creative, and are able to demonstrate strong technical knowledge while working in a fast paced environment. This person should have a passion for food innovation, a desire to improve the food system, and enjoy working as part of a small, nimble team in a lab setting. The Product Innovation team works in constant collaboration to pursue end-to-end innovation for multiple clients.

    Primary responsibilities:

    • Conduct sensory, ingredient, and process assessments for new clients 
    • Enhance texture, functionality and appearance of product formulations
    • Formulation of new products from benchtop to production scale for multiple product categories
    • New ingredient sourcing, evaluation, costing, qualification and specification
    • Sensory testing: create, design and conduct testing
    • Ability to scale up recipes and attend plant trials at co-packers as needed
    • Conduct shelf life assessments and tests 
    • Plan and execute day to day project and lab activities
    • Manage time and priorities across multiple projects in collaboration with the team
    • Communicate effectively with clients and team members

    Requirements:

    • 3+ years of hands-on experience in food development
    • BS or MS in food science
    • Self-starter, enjoys working in a fast-paced innovation-centric environment

    • Ability to work in-person at our Product Innovation Lab in San Mateo, CA.

    Salary: competitive, commensurate with experience
